In order to build a new highland for hybrid rice research and breeding in the middle and upper reaches of the Yangtze River basin and strive to ensure food security, under the cordial care of Academician Yuan Longping and the strong support of the Chongqing Municipal Agriculture and Rural Committee, on April 28, 2021, the National Hybrid Rice Engineering Technology Research Center officially approved the establishment of the Chongqing Branch Center in Dazu District. The sub-center mainly carries out aerospace breeding (including rice, sorghum, vegetables, etc.), hybrid rice research and development, new variety test demonstration, basic theoretical research, etc. The Chongqing branch consists of 3 research laboratories and 1 comprehensive office, including the Aerospace Breeding Research Laboratory, the Hybrid Rice Breeding Research Laboratory, and the Physiology, Ecology and Cultivation Research Laboratory. Each research laboratory is composed of experts dispatched by the National Hybrid Rice Engineering Technology Research Center and experts from cooperative units to jointly carry out research and development work. It is planned that within 5-8 years, a demonstration base for hybrid rice R&D and breeding (including aerospace varieties) and new variety testing will be built in Dazu, which will serve as a new highland for hybrid rice R&D, crop breeding and new variety test demonstration in the middle and upper reaches of the Yangtze River. In the near future, we will strive to breed and screen out a number of new varieties of excellent rice, sorghum and cash crops suitable for planting in Chongqing, which can be used and promoted in Chongqing and surrounding suitable areas, so as to help Chongqing farmers increase production and income, and contribute to Chongqing's agricultural development and rural revitalization.
